Expert has extensive experience in the industrial practice of process control. He has served as an industrial control consultant, has written two chapters for industrial chemical engineering handbooks on process control and has written a popular undergraduate process control textbook that has been used by over 90 chemical engineering departments in the US and Canada. He has extensive experience in distillation control due to research and technical publications in that area as well as teaching industrial short courses on this topic and applying advanced control algorithms for distillation control for industrial columns. In addition, he has expertise in pH control. He wrote a patent that was granted on an advanced approach to pH control and worked on a team that applied this technology industrially. Expert has had experience in process optimization for the refining industry and the high volume chemical intermediate business based on research in that area and directing the Texas Tech Process Control and Optimization Consortium. Through the control and optimization experience, he has developed expertise on process operations in the refining and chemical industry. He is co-author of an introductory chemical engineering textbook.
Recently, Expert has been developing simulations that predict the stability or instability of pressure relief valves. The simplest cases involve a valve connected to a pipe which is connected to the process (e.g., a batch chemical reactor) while more complex cases involve multiple pressure relief valves connect to complex piping networks that connect to the process (e.g., the overhead condensers of a crude unit in a refinery). In addition, Expert has developed simulators that predict the temperature, composition and pressure transients of a batch chemical reactor in contact with a fire.
