BIOINSECTICIDES; BIOLOGICAL PESTICIDES. Expert [pronounced cawtch-a-tourians] has been the Director of the first BioInsecticide Research Laboratories at the University since he was appointed to the position in 1980. This Provincial Strategically Funded Program has established research and teaching programs in the use of microbial insecticides with focus on fungi and bacteria. Expert has performed both laboratory scale and field scale (10-60 ha) pest management studies. He has also conducted environmental monitoring and measures effects on non-target species. Expert is author or co-author of over 110 publications on bioinsecticides and biological pesticides.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY; MYCOTOXICOLOGY; TRICHOTHESCENE. Since 1978, Expert has led a group of graduate students and associates in studying the effects of mycotoxins associated with food and feed. They continue to study the binary mixture of mycotoxins. They are also developing genetics of inactivation and contruction of resistant plants. Expert has authored 38 articles, reviews, and chapters on trichothecene mycotoxins.

MICROBIAL AND FOOD BIOTECHNOLOGY. Expert has studied and taught courses in microbial biotechnology, insecticides, and carcinogens/mutagens. Along with Y.H. Hui, he has edited the first authoritative book, Food Biotechnology: Microorganisms, published by VCH press and released in January 1995.

INTEGRATED PEST MANAGEMENT. For 12 years Expert has been active in research, teaching, and training of graduate students and professional staff members in alternatives in insect pest management. He has performed laboratory and field spray/inspect studies of bacterial and fungal pest control agents. He has developed DNA fingerprint technologies for release of microbes into the environment. He has worked with international industrial firms and farm organizations in technology transfer. His pest management interests encompasses both agriculture and forestry.

MUTAGENESIS. Expert has expertise in environmental mutagen interaction with microbial and submammalian test systems. He can screen mutagens and perform such tests for industrially-used chemicals or additives.

Expert is a member of over 10 professional societies and is a Member Appointed by Federal Minister of State for Science and Technology to the Task Force on Biotechnology. He has been an invited member of the U.S./Canada Space Biology Experimentation Panel, the Agriculture Canada Grants Panel, and the Saskatchewan Health Research Board Panel.
Awards / Recognition
Expert was nominated for the most innovative Canadian Researcher of 1981 (the Manning Award) and also for the Agricultural Institute of Canada's Grindley Medal (1984). He is listed in Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in America, American Men and Women of Science, Longman Reference in World Research, and International Men of Achievement. He has received scientific delegations from many countries in the Pacific Rim, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia as well as USA.
