Expert has spent 15 years as a massage therapist, 12 years as a publisher/editor, 18 years as an educator, and 35 years developing personal care products, though not consecutively. In 1988 he founded an institution setting new standards for vocational aromatherapy education. In 2000, he moved from the UK to California, and took a break from teaching. He is now heading back into education, while continuing with product development consultancy. He spends much of his time tracking published research relevant to essential oils and, he often collaborates on projects with doctors, herbalists and pharmacologists. He is familiar with the foundations of oriental medicine, and Western herbal and naturopathic traditions, with their emphasis on cleansing, protecting, strengthening immune function and aiding natural healing processes.

His competencies include data mining, functional fragrances, pharmacology, safety, delivery systems and technical writing. He has a passion for innovation and has 35 years experience in developing essential oil-based products.

Key achievements include:

- Produced more than 50 new functional fragrances by combining natural perfumery with the therapeutic, hygienic, or cosmeceutical properties of essential oils.
- Established the first company in the UK to market aromatherapy products, promoting the industry-leading branded products under his name.
- Many of these products have won awards in the UK.
- Early pioneer of using lavender as a product concept for skin soothing and calming products despite negative connotation; lavender oil and products now account for a large portion of company sales.
- First innovator outside of Australia to commit to the use of tea tree oil in natural products, developing a tea tree shampoo.
- Expansive knowledge of essential oil chemistry, metabolism, pharmacology, and toxicology, as well as the understanding of the psychological and behavioral effects of odor.

From 2013 to present, Expert has consulted on a non-exclusive basis for an essential oil company based in Idaho, helping them source bulk essential oils, and formulate or reformulate blended products. In 2014 he helped a national company reformulate an existing chest-rub type product In 2007 he helped the Natural Perfumers Guild prepare a fact sheet on both recent and proposed legislation, and how this would affect members. In 2001 and 2002 he created 9 new natural fragrances for a U.S. company. Each fragrance is used in shampoo, body lotion and deodorant.

He wrote the first book on aromatherapy in the English language, later translated into 10 other languages. In 1974, he was the first to offer essential oils to the consumer in the UK.

He is regarded as the prime mover in aromatherapy, and helped greatly to create the market that exists today. In 2013 co-authored second edition of Essential Oil Safety, a 780 page textbook.
