Request Expert

Expert has built or rebuilt over 30 automotive (chassis dyno) or engine test cells, most with sophisticated automated data acquisition and control systems. He is currently operating both automotive chassis dynamometer and small engine dynamometer tests at a state-of-the-art emissions test facility for small engines through medium-duty trucks. The primary function of the facility is to monitor in-use emissions of a fleet of alternative and conventional fuel vehicles and small engine products. The facility has two chassis dynamometers and a small engine dynamometer capable of automated steady-state and dynamic test cycles, including SAE J1088 and IM-240. Raw or dilute emissions can be monitored via conventional FID, NDIR, and chemiluminescence as well as FTIR instruments.

Expert is currently monitoring fleets of alternative-fueled vehicles. Alternative-fueled vehicles are matched with baseline vehicles, and monitored for emissions, life cycle costs, and user convenience in normal state and municipal fleet and pool service. The program is beginning its second year of a scheduled five years, and over 10 million miles have been accumulated on over 300 vehicles. He also built two successful prototype gasoline and alcohol-electric hybrid automobiles, plus a range extension genset and trailer for electric vehicles.

Expert developed the first commercial, small engine, solid-state ignition system, and spent several subsequent years developing improvements in small engine ignition magnetos.

A majority of Expert's career has been in engine research laboratory settings, evaluating advanced engine concepts and components of all types. His experience includes fuel systems, induction systems, exhaust systems, starting systems, cooling systems (including bi-phase or boiling liquid systems), materials, sound analysis, combustion chamber design, piston design, bearings and lubrication systems, mechanical and electronic governors, mufflers, coatings and paints.
