Expert became interested in electrochemistry as an undergraduate and followed that interest throughout his career. He got a PhD in Chemical Engineering with fuel cells as his topic and then went to work in a new Electrochemistry Department at W.R. Grace & Co.'s central R&D lab outside of Washington DC. His work covered a range of electrochemical topics but focused on battery separators and lithium batteries. When lithium ion batteries emerged, this became his primary focus and he developed separators for these batteries. On joining the Celgard Division of Hoechst, he set up a Battery Applications lab to build and test lithium-ion batteries and supported development of new products, work which culminated in the first commercial introduction of a trilayer separator. He then joined PolyStor where he led an effort to develop a hybrid electric vehicle battery based on lithium nickel cobalt oxide. Expert became convinced that lack of design tools was inhibiting progress of battery development and started Employer to develop and distribute software tools for battery design. While leading Battery Design he has co-founded a couple of other startup battery companies and served and as consultant for many companies and national labs. He has lectured widely on design principles for lithium-ion batteries, especially large cells. Battery Design's flagship product, Battery Design Studio(R), is the most widely used battery design tool in the industry.

Based on customer requirements for a battery-powered consumer product, identified appropriate battery chemistry and recommended commercially available cells from three manufacturers. For a corporation, reviewed their patent portfolio for a battery technology and wrote report evaluating utility of the patents. For an investor, visited a start-up battery company and evaluated their technology. For an automotive supply company, prepared a review of techniques to design thermal systems for lithium-ion batteries. For a battery developer, created a simulation model to direct efforts to improve the design.
