Expert serves on the faculty of a University, Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. He previously held a senior scientist and lecturer position at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. His interests are at the interface of chemistry and biology, where he is a lead author on a series of papers in most reputable scientific journals across the fields of organic chemistry, drug-target interactions, pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, protein design, and microbiology.

His particular focus lies on membrane and soluble proteins, macromolecular complexes and nucleic acids relevant to human pathogens and disease. He spearheaded the group which isolated and characterized the pathogenicity factor ASST from uropathogenic E. coli, which resulted in international media coverage. Currently, he is engaged in medicinal chemistry approaches to develop small molecule drugs targeting this enzyme as potential cures against urinary tract infections. Furthermore, his research revealed the mechanisms of multiple conserved membrane proteins, a class of molecules of highest interest as targets of pharmaceuticals. As a principal investigator, he obtained competitive international funding to study the assembly of bacterial outer membrane and develop novel peptidomimetic inhibitors as potential antibiotics against severe nosocomial infections on a joint project with a pharmaceutical company.

In addition to identifying drug targets and the development of small-molecule, peptidomimetic and biological therapeutics, he serves as Editor and Reviewer for multiple scientific journals and is an active member of the Harvard Graduate Business Club. He regularly consults for a major pharmaceutical company in Cambridge, MA (with headquarters in Switzerland) on drug and vaccine development and for a Boston-based hedge fund specializing in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical technology investments.
