As a mechanical engineer, Expert has used biomedical instrumentation adapted from classical mechanical engineering to measure, both invasively and noninvasively, flow and material properties relevant to medical diagnoses and quantification of physiological phenomena.

Expert notes that fluid boundary layers develop between flowing fluids and fixed surfaces, causing friction or drag. He has full familiarity with the effects of boundary layers that may develop in a wide variety of both internal and external flows.

Expert notes that fluids include both liquids and gases, with the former being much less compressible than the latter. He states that it is important to quantify the degree of compressibility in the analyses of certain physical and physiological phenomena. He has taken account of such compressibilities in calculations of blast waves and explosions.

Expert states that fluid dynamics, also known as fluid mechanics (the study of the flow of liquids and gases), is governed by a complex set of nonlinear partial differential equations known as the Navier-Stokes equations. These equations are often very complex to solve, requiring comprehensive computations. They can describe a wide variety of phenomena, ranging from the smoke rising from a cigarette to the airflows over the wing of a supersonic fighter aircraft. Expert has extensive experience in this specialized field and has published his research results in the international peer-reviewed literature. Fluid dynamics forms the primary specialty of Expert, who has published extensively and given university courses in this classical field of applied mechanics. He further notes that Bernouilli's equation describes the relationship between pressure and flow velocity. It is a fundamental energy concept in fluid mechanics, a field in which Expert is highly trained and experienced.

Expert is highly experienced in capturing the primary mechanisms governing the fluid flow phenomena one observes in nature and the environment by expressing such mechanisms as a set of governing equations based on the laws of physics. He notes that this process is known as "fluid mechanics mathematical modeling." The resulting equations can sometimes by solved analytically (in the form of closed mathematical expressions); but more often, computational solutions are required for real life problems.

Expert notes that the permeability coefficient is an indicator of resistance levels of fluid flows passing through porous or semi-porous media. He has made use of these coefficients in studying ground water phenomena in civil engineering.

Expert states that gas mechanics and gas dynamics refer to the same phenomena, that of the flow of gases at relatively high speeds, in which shock wave fronts or blast waves may form. This subject formed the groundwork for his doctoral dissertation.

Expert notes that hydromechanics is the fluid mechanics of water, a subset of fluid mechanics, in which he has extensive experience.

With the accident reconstruction analysis in hand, Expert uses his advanced knowledge in applied mechanics and biomechanics to analyze the displacements and compute the resulting forces that caused the injury or damage. He has served as senior professor of mechanical engineering and of medicine and has worked productively in both the mechanical and aircraft industries.
