PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CYCLE TIME. Expert has focused a significant portion of his career on product development manipulation. This has involved reducing the cycle time from concept to product introduction. He has applied this experience to a variety of scientific disciplines. These include metallurgical, polymer, and ceramic technologies. Most recently, Expert has led a group in reducing its cycle time by 75 percent. His other productivity improvements include having increased the rate of product introduction from four in a period of 10 years to four in a period of one year.

STAINLESS STEEL; AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL; AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL CORROSION. Expert observes that a considerable amount of work has been accomplished in developing new stainless steel compositions and in failure analysis problems with stainless steels in the food and biomedical industries. His development work in this area has focused on comparing properties of new stainless steels with those of existing stainless steels. In doing so, he has measured a number of properties. These include corrosion resistance, weldability, and mechanical properties.

DENTAL MATERIALS. Expert has aimed a significant portion of his career at developing new and improved dental materials. He has aided in the production of about 50 new products which were introduced in a five year period. These products include amalgams, dental composites, dental porcelains, orthodontic braces and archwires, denture teeth, and denture base materials.

METAL; METALLURGY. Expert earned his Ph.D. in metallurgy. He has spent all of his professional career working in the area of metals and material development. He has concentrated on relationships between material properties and the structure as a means of understanding performance characteristics of a metal. The characteristics which he examines include corrosion, mechanical properties, weldability, strength, toughness, and biocompatibility.

HOT FORGING; PRESS FORGING; METAL FORMING. Expert has recently worked on press forging and rotary forging of highly alloyed materials. This work has emphasized alloys which are usually used in metal forming.

METAL ROLLING; HOT ROLLING; TITANIUM AND TITANIUM ALLOYS. Expert has been intimately involved in developing rolling parameters for rolling highly alloyed materials and titanium on a new continuous rod and bar mill. He has also been involved in the manufacture of titanium and titanium alloys for biomedical uses. The manufacturing steps have involved melting, forming, and rolling, while the product forms produced have included bar and wire.

MEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURING; BIOMEDICAL DEVICES; BIOMEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURING. A significant portion of Expert's career has involved transferring developmental medical devices into full scale manufacturing. He has had a particular emphasis on dental material manufacture. This has included amalgams, composites, porcelains, denture teeth, denture base materials, and fluoride products.

Expert has developed new alloys which are currently in commercial service. Others are the subjects of US Patents. Also modified chemistry of currently available alloys to increase processability and increase process yields through our manufacturing process.

Expert has significant expertise in New Product Development. His ability to plan, organize and direct new product programs has resulted in numerous new products being marketed which have had impact on company sales.
He has procedures, interpersonal skills and planning expertise to execute the most complex programs.

Expert's work at Employer has concentrated on melting and hot working high nickel alloys for aerospace, biomedical and corrosion resistant applications. The processes used include VIM, VAR and ESR melting, homogenization, press forging, radial forging and rolling to billet and bar and to a lesser degree, plate.

The use of Physical Metallurgy permeates all of the efforts in the current assignment. The relationship between the complex structures of nickel base and titanium materials and both processability and properties is critical to successful manufacture of these alloys to specification. Knowledge of the kinetics of microstructure formation is also critical.

The complex alloys that are currently manufactured by Employer require intimate knowledge of the relationship of properties and microstructure to ensure that the products can be manufactured to meet specifications. The knowledge is also required to continuously improve the products to meet more stringent specification requirements.
Also the successful development of new and improved materials requires the relationship between structure and properties to be understood.
