The catalyst synthesis technology developed by expert and his associates is directly applied to the catalysis of petroleum and chemical reactions. Therefore, the insight that he has in the catalyst technology allows him to solve many problems relating to the catalysis of petroleum and chemical reactions. Reactions of interest include fluid cracking of hydrocarbons, hydrocracking, desulfurization, acid/base catalyzed reactions, carbonylation, and isomerization of hydrocarbons over metal oxide.

The catalyst synthesis technology that he and his associates have developed is directly applied to the catalysis of pollutants. Therefore, the insight expert has in catalyst technology allows him to solve many problems relating to the catalysis of pollution abatement.

Expert's catalyst synthesis technology is applied to the manufacture of metal oxides, usually supported on another metal oxide such as silica, alumina, and zeolites.

Expert has completed development programs recently that use homogeneous metal complexes for oxidative coupling reactions. His group has also examined the use of very strong acids as co-catalyst for this reaction. His interest also includes the use of very strong homogeneous acids to catalyze rearrangements and isomerizations.

As a research engineer for a major oil company, he developed solid acid catalysts and designed reactors for FCCU technology. In subsequent projects at Georgia Tech, he assisted sponsors in developing high efficient FCCU catalysts. Later work centered on developing characterization techniques.

Expert developed a new catalyst system for coupling aromatics using Pd and a very strong acid. This technology is currently before the U.S. Patent office. His group has been awarded a patent (U.S. 5,679,867) for a novel solid acid catalyst for toluene cabonylation. Additionally, he has developed an analytical technique based on NMR to measure the water content of triflic acid at levels less than 1 wt% H2O in acid.

Expert has developed solid acid catalysts to replace AlCl3/HCl as the catalyst for reactions involving aromatics as the substrate. This work was done as part of a contract to develop novel solid acid catalysts. For the past 20 years, he and his research group have developed a new technique to produce high efficiency catalysts having exceptional selectivity/yield for reactions such as alcohol dehydrogenation to aldehydes.

Expert's group has developed new techniques to determine the active metal surface area of metal catalysts supported on oxides such as copper. For 20 years, they have developed catalysts based on copper for reactions such as acidic isomerization of hydrocarbons, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, hydrogenolysis of esters, and catalytic decomposition of NOx, selective oxidation of olefins.
