As part of his academic research as well as commercial product development, he has developed a handful of different array processors for application areas ranging from image processing and generation to signal and matrix processors. To enable this development he has extensive knowledge of the research literature of different array processor architectures. And as an excellent communicator, he can bring up to speed the novice as well as the expert.

He was the main performance architect for five generations of cache and memory controllers for the Intel Pentium and Pentium Pro chipsets. During this period, he developed a cache/memory simulator to help in design evaluations and performance optimizations. This system was used in a production environment.

Since 1992, he has been involved in commercial product design of personal computer processors, chipsets, graphics controllers, and I/O processors. He is the inventor of Intel's Observation Architecture, a diagnostics processor for the PC platform. His experience includes cost constrained consumer devices such as XBox, and PS-3, high-volume desktop and laptop chipsets and GPUs, and high-performance server chipsets and processors. As principal architect on many of these projects he has extensive experience in communicating and validating the architecture spec to/with the design team.

As part of his computer architecture design exploration research he has developed several large scale concurrent databases, simulators, and data analysis systems. More recently, he has moved on to MPI-based concurrent systems, and is working with MPI libraries such as PETSc and Trilinos for high-performance computing for finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics applications.

As part of the Stillwater Supercomputing product development research, he is the principal architect for a new parallel architecture optimized for computational science. To develop this new architecture, the history and implementations of wide spectrum of parallel machines was evaluated; ranging from MasPar and Thinking Machines CM-1, CM-2 SIMD machines, and Thinking Machines CM-5 cluster architecture, and the more modern Cray XT and IBM Blue Gene architectures. Also, as a performance architect on NVIDIA Tesla, he is intimately familiar with parallel graphics processing units as well.

As the primary performance architect on the Intel Pentium and Pentium Pro desktop chipsets, as well as the NVIDIA nForce chipsets he drove the performance estimation and validation methodologies for these programs. He also managed a platform performance engineering team at Intel that was charted with performance characterization and optimization of chip sets and graphics controllers. He was also the principal performance architect on Intel's Pentium III x86 processor and Accelerated Graphics Port bus architecture and developed a performance characterization and estimation methodology for interactive graphical applications. Similarly, he developed such systems for the 3dfx OpenGL software stack, and for NVIDIA chipsets and GPUs.

To create innovative micro-architectures for his role as computer architect at Intel, 3dfx, and NVIDIA, he has developed many computer models of future products. This modeling expertise is essential to properly plan and execute new product development for electronic products. The architecture model allows for rapid design exploration, quickly identifying the best overall structure of the new machine. Once the basic architecture is agreed on, the architecture model acts as a gold standard for the implementation, and presents an executable spec for validation and verification. Having build more than a dozen such systems, he is uniquely qualified to help organizations set up and deliver world class research and development processes.

For seven years, he was involved in fundamental research in design automation for systolic architecture, with several papers published and doctoral research completed. As part of this research he built two different design systems for systolic architectures that started from an algorithmic description and automatically generated a working multi-chip systolic machine. Due to this research, he has deep knowledge of the literature and history of Systolic Algorithms. Having built two physical systolic chips and worked on Warp and iWarp, he has a first hand appreciation of the successes and failures of this class of algorithms and machines.
