Expert S. Expert, MD, MS, is professor and chief emeritus of cardiothoracic surgery at University of Illinois at Chicago, and currently professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the University of California San Diego. He has also served as professor and chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Yale University and Case Western Reserve University Medical Schools. His interests are in the treatment of adult cardiac disease with traditional and new surgical approaches, and in optimization of outcomes of cardiac surgery for acquired heart disease. His areas of Specialization are Adult Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery, Biological Assistance of the Heart, Esophageal Surgery, and Off Pump Cardiac Surgery. He is also interested in surgical & adjuvant treatments of lung and esophageal cancer, and in the training of cardiothoracic surgeons. He has been a principal investigator on a number of clinical studies and trials of approaches to protect the ischemic myocardium. He has studied and defined the characteristics of the hypertrophied heart in various conditions of health and disease. He has been a member of the Surgery, Anesthesia, and Trauma study section of the NIH and a consultant to the cardiac surgery branch of NIH. He also is an editor of a major text book on Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.

Expert has successfully developed and/or expanded cardiothoracic programs at Washington University in St. Louis, Yale University in New Haven, Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and the University of Illinois in Chicago including programs in heart and lung transplantation, cardiac valves reconstruction, arrythmia surgery, and lung and esophageal surgery.
