Expert has specialized in the design of batch and continuous blending operations typical in the chemical, food, detergent, and personal care products industries. He has developed designs to minimize product aeration and eliminate product storage equipment. He has designed solid and liquid raw material addition systems based on mass flow to cut batch cycle times and improve product quality. Expert has designed automated recipe-driven batching control systems to increase quality, reduce cycle time, and minimize operator manpower. He has designed raw material handling systems using totes and supersacs to minimize or eliminate operator handling of drums and bags, which improves industrial hygiene, operator safety, and efficiency.

Expert has experience in the production of liquid and dry detergents, liquid soaps, and shampoos and conditioners. He also has experience in the production and neutralization of sulfonic acids and the production of alcohol sulfates. Expert has been a process/project engineer and construction supervisor for two Chemithon SO3 sulfonation plants using jet and falling film reactors.


Expert has specified and selected a wide variety of processing equipment for industrial chemical and sanitary processes. He has spent his entire career working with process equipment in various plant settings. All the equipment he has specified he has also installed and placed in operation. Expert can provide advice on both the type of equipment best suited for an application and equipment manufacturers. In detail, Expert has specified and applied metallic and non-metallic centrifugal and positive displacement pumps including gear, piston, and sliding vane; and progressive cavity, diaphragm, and peristaltic designs for Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids and slurries with a wide variety of physical properties. He has specified sealless pumps for aggressive chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. Expert has specified non-metallic, steel and alloy tanks for the storage of bulk liquids in volumes less than 100 gallons to 25,000 gallons in a variety of configurations including dished and flat bottoms, and featuring internal and external heat transfer surfaces. He has specified reaction vessels with pressure ratings from full vacuum to 40 psig, with internal and external heat transfer areas.



Expert has specified the mixing systems for storage tanks using circulation loops, eductors, and top entering mixers. He applied composite shaft designs for top entering mixers in tall tanks. He has also specified mixers for batch and blending vessels to promote solids suspension, liquid blending, and gas dispersion.

Expert has specified and selected a wide variety of instruments from all major suppliers for the measurement of process variables for projects with control strategies ranging from completely manual to fully automated. He has specified instrumentation for automation projects using PLCs and DCSs with proprietary HMIs and PC-based GUI and SCADA systems. Expert has installed and placed in operation all the instruments and control systems he has specified. He can provide advice on the selection of specific measurement devices and on their integration with a process control system. He can also provide assistance with the selection of a process control system.


Expert has specified and applied instrumentation for the continuous and point level measurement of liquid and solids; temperature and pressure measurement; and mass and volumetric flow of liquids, solids, and gases. He has specified devices for installation in hazardous environments using explosion proof and intrinsically safe design, and X, Y, or Z purging to meet the area classification. He has successfully applied instruments in non-standard applications (for example: a nuclear device for liquid density measurement used on a powdered product) to provide reliable processing information economically and with minimal maintenance. Expert has designed control systems for the continuous proportional addition of multiple raw materials. He has designed control systems for various batch processes and for standalone processes such as product filtration and the pneumatic unloading of solids. He has written the sequence of operation instructions for the automation of these and other processes.


Expert has 15 years experience managing projects up to $6 million. He has an intimate understanding of the interrelations of the various engineering efforts that must be coordinated to meet the time and budget goals of a successful project. He has worked on all parts of capital projects, including process design, estimating, equipment selection (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation), controls design, and purchasing. He has written contractor bid requests, selected the contractors, and supervised the construction on projects. He has used design build techniques for fast track projects. Expert can provide advice on project cost estimating and scheduling and offer recommendations for managing the project critical path.
