He has designed several compounding and rotational molding plants. He has owned a color manufacturing plant, a compounding plant and two pulverizing plants. For his plants he designed the mixers, the high speed multivented extruders, extruder mixing screws, classifiers and pulverizers.
He has helped develop new rotationally molded products for clients, bringing them to market successfully. He has two patents related to granite colorants and metalflake colorants for rotomolded parts.
He has 24 years experience manufacturing thermoplastic colorants including Concentrate (Masterbatch), Dry Color, Liquid Color, Paste Dispersions and Precolor (Compounded Resins). These products colored almost all commercially available resins, but his companies specialized in polyethylene, polypropylene, ABS, Nylon, Acrylic, Polycarbonate, Silicone and Styrenics. He specialized in Flow promoters, In Process Antistats, Fragrances and Blowing agents in liquid and powder form. His customers were rotational molders, injection molders, sheet, profile and film extruders.
He specialized in color and additives for extruded monofilament and slit film used in the rope industry. He developed a defibulator additive for slit film rope, improving the tensile and elongation and eliminating the rough surface of the rope. His colorant company specialized in high temperature colorants and stabilization systems to improve weatherability and heat stability of polymers. UV stabilization of all resins, including polyolefins, and pigments and dyes were continually tested using QUV and Zenon Arc equipment. Antioxidants and Ultraviolet absorbers were continually tested to reduce polymer degradation and improve the quality of the additive concentrates and compounds.
He is an accomplished Color matcher and developer of thermoplastic compounds. He has trained dozens of Color matchers and Quality Control technicians. He currently sells and specifies QC equipment and trains his customers in the use of the equipment. He has started (Greenfield) two plants and managed five Colorant and Compounding plants.
He started his career in Plastics Product Development in the Research Center of one of the major rubber companies. He gained experience in thermoforming, reverse roll coating, flocking and casting urethane foam. He became efficient in the use of very advanced testing equipment.
He then became a plant chemist in a thermoset rubber profile extrusion and compression molding plant, where he converted all of the products into thermoplastic polymers. Some products he converted to thermoplastic rubber, EVA and some to PVC (vinyl). The company also had an injection molding division that injection molded the thermoplastic parts that were previously compression molded thermosets.
He then became a vinyl chemist at a rotational molder manufacturing balls, boat fenders, toys, automotive mechanical rubber products and rubber balls. He developed all the vinyl (plastisol) compounds. He invented and developed the vinyl ABA red white and blue basket ball. He was in charge of technicians, testing all molded products and quality control of incoming materials and compounds.
He has helped bring new products to market, from design to production. The most recent product required development of new advanced molding techniques to manufacture a successful product. He has designed and built three state of the art production molding and extrusion facilities, creating three of the most highly automated plants of their kind in the industry.He has designed high speed extruders and screws creating the fastest, most efficient production compounding extruders in the world at that time. They have effectively operated at up to 5 times the speed of standard commonly used extruders in the industry. Not only is the throughput much greater, but the quality is greatly improved. He has designed and built pulverizers that reduce plastic pellets to 35 mesh powder used in the rotational molding industry. These pulverizers are still the industry standard and used internationally. As a consultant, a large part of his work has been in improving plant efficiency and reducing scrap. Usually during the plant visit, to reduce scrap, he puts on a workshop to teach fundamentals of the process to the employees. The workshops are designed for machine operators and management.
