Expert has expertise in both qualitative and quantitative research techniques, and has applied both using a mixed-methods approach to perform both original research and program evaluation for national educational initiatives such as New Tech High School and the charter school movement. She has also performed quality assurance and evaluation for non-profit charities and educational centers. In addition to her expertise in research and evaluation design, Expert has extensive knowledge of parametric and non-parametric statistical procedures, survey design, focus groups and observation protocols.

Expert has a Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the University of Illinois, and has taught in the Cognitive Science program at Swarthmore and Hampshire Colleges, as well as the Behaviorial Brain Sciences program at Franklin and Marshall College. She has performed original research in the cognitive sciences, behavioral sciences and human development. She has also obtained federal and private funding for her research.

Dr. Ratterman has provided research expertise for school districts in Indiana and Illinois, and has performed extensive external evaluation projects for national educational initiatives such as New Tech High Schools, the Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellows Program, the DeHaan Family Foundation, Indianapolis Urban League, and Indiana Black Expo.

Expert has performed an extensive statistical analysis of student achievement and growth for all students currently enrolled in Indiana Charter schools. Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling, she examined differences in growth between charter school students and students in traditional public schools. Expert has performed focus groups to examine school engagement in middle school, using a variety of developmentally appropriate tasks to engage the usually reticent middle school students in lively and informative conversations about school climate, academic rigor and social issues in their school.Expert has designed a comprehensive quantitative evaluation procedure for several educational reform movements being implemented in the state of Indiana. This research uses mixed methods research that includes quantitative student achievement and survey data, as well as qualitative observational and focus group methods.
