Electrical & Magnetic Properties of Metal-Insulator Composites, Cermets, Carbon Black-Polymer Mixes

ID: 722151 Massachusetts, USA

Request Expert

Expert (pronounced Sish-L) is an experimental physicist with an expertise in the electrical properties of carbon black/polymer composites. She has experience with the measurement of thermophysical properties (thermopower, thermal conductivity) and transport properties (Hall Effect, Righi-Leduc Effect, Peltier Effect) of a variety of composite materials, semiconducting materials, and electrical conductors.

Expert also has technical expertise in hands-on electrical and optical characterization of materials, with special expertise in carbon-polymer composites and cermets (ceramic metals).

She has performed Hall Effect measurements on amorphous Ge/Si superlattices, GaAs-AlGaAs HEMT structures (Quantum Hall Effect), and granular metal films (cermets) near the percolation threshold. She has measured the electrical
conductivity of doped polyacetylenes and a variety of carbon black-polymer composites which were part of the RCA capacitive video disc project. She developed an electrochromic cermet and measured its optical and electrical properties. She has measured the thermal conductivity of a variety of electronic materials, including pyrolytic boron nitride, graphite, and GaN.

Expert has had extensive experience in preparing technical reports and proposals for many small businesses, with emphasis on the SBIR program. She regularly consults on the development and evaluation of technical proposals in her area of expertise.

Expert did testing of electrical properties of carbon nanofibers for an energy storage device (capacitor). She has also tested the electrical properties of conducting polymers for a non-metal fuse.Expert prepares SBIR proposals for a wide range of projects. She is very familiar with the SBIR program and can advise on the preparation of proposals, including editing proposals, preparing proposals in consultation with the technical staff of the client, and preparing working outlines of proposals. Expert has technical expertise in hands-on electrical and optical characterization of materials, with special expertise in carbon-polymer composites and cermets (ceramic metals). She is currently studying the electrical properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites during cracking failure to develop early detection of cracking.

Other Relevant Experience
Expert is currently co-Principal Investigator with Maurice A. Tivey on an NSF-funded research project which involves building and testing an instrument for determining the orientation of geological features on the seafloor. The proposed device uses new magnetic sensor technology and newly available optical communications technology using blue LED devices. The work is sponsored by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI).

She is collaborating with Dr. Tivey on another project, supported in part by the NSF, involving the development of marine adhesives and markers for undersea use. This research takes the form of a one-semester elective laboratory engineering course for students at Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, Bristol Community College, and the Employer (MMA) in partnership with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
