Expert has been involved in the design of many microcontoller-based systems. The Alarm Annunciator was designed for a process instrumentation industry for annunciation of fault parameters. It was a modular design with each controller handling up to eight isolated inputs following all the standard annunciation sequences. The Programmable Logic Controller was developed as an import substitution for the Csepel gear-grinding machine for a gear manufacturing industry. The PID Controller was developed for bioinstrumentation industry for use in their bioreactors. He also designed a microcontroller based temperature controller capable of monitoring and controlling eight channels, useful in process industries. Expert designed an ultrasonic range finder to obtain range information up to 500 mm with 0.1-mm accuracy for application in the obstacle avoidance path planning of mobile robots. His microcontroller-based security system, which accepts a numeric password to check the validity and time with voice annunciation and motor drive output circuit, is useful for monitoring entry in highly protected areas. The microcontroller-based robot controller is a multi controller system consisting of one controller for each joint axis with a PC host. The remote robot controllers, which interfaces remote infrareds, teach pendant to a 4 doff PUMA robot for remote teach and play back control. His DC Motor control system to control a two-quadrant MOSFET chopper is used in the speed control of a 3 HP DC motor. The microcontroller-based cycloconverter is used to obtain the firing sequences for a thyristor based three-phase cycloconverter and to produce a variable frequency source. And finally, his three-axis lathe controller, which replaced an existing manual lathe, was converted to a NC lathe with facility to rotate the tool, feed the tool and choose the tool.

He instituted the Power and Industrial Electronics facility in the university. He also developed the following microprocessor based power controllers: DC motor control; peristaltic pump control; AC motor control; cycloconverters; controlled high current battery chargers and serviced thyristor drives in paper mills.

Expert performed the following procedures in over 50,000 rural drinking water sources for UNICEF and the Indian State Government. The process is as follows. water quality testing for chemical constituents; bacteriological screening & MPN tests; graphical analysis of water quality data; block-wise analysis of data; sanitary inspections; correlation of health and hygiene; design of database & query system; presentation of results in CD form; water quality data analysis; alphanumeric numbering of sources; preparation of action plans; assistance in remedial measures; assistance in promoting community involvement; and performance evaluation surveys and has conducted training programs.

Expert has designed drinking water quality standard guidelines. He has based his guidelines on many considerations. His recommended value for a parameter in drinking water represents the concentration of the constituent that ensures aesthetically pleasing water that does not result in any significant risk to the health of the consumer. Any violations should signal a need to investigate the cause, initiate remedial action and report to health authorities. Short-term exposures to contaminants may be tolerated, but the substances involved must be identified and corrective measures initiated, while at the same time, local prevailing geographical, socioeconomic, dietary, industrial and agricultural conditions must be taken into consideration.

The guidelines must also take into account the precision, validity and appropriateness of the sampling procedures. He has developed a document, based on WHO guidelines for drinking water quality, explaining the parameters relevant to water quality monitoring and their ill health effects. To ensure that drinking water is free from bacteria indicative of pollution with excreta, the regular examination for indicators of fecal pollution must be evolved.

The sampling procedures must identify problems associated with chemical constituents, which arise from their ability to cause adverse effects after prolonged exposure and they must indicate tolerable concentrations rather than be interpreted as targets for water quality. The judgment of the water may be based on scientific criteria, defining dose-response relationships. The analytic data must show frequency of occurrence and concentrations found in drinking water, and as a result, the potential application of suitable control techniques to remove or reduce concentrations, and the rationale for recommended concentrations. Health information on the community, the group information on health related and aesthetic parameters, and the grouping of constituents as health-related and aesthetic must all be taken into consideration.

To address the problems, he recommends communities select procedures that minimize analytical errors especially of constituents that occur in low concentrations. The accuracy of a recommended procedure is to be governed by the objectives of the program of sampling and analysis.
