MINERAL METABOLISM. Expert (pronounced Chika-Nairins, and prefers Dr. Narins) has expertise in mineral absorption, metabolism, and related interactions. HUMAN GROWTH; INFANT GROWTH. Dr. Narins has conducted extensive research on the patterns of growth during infancy (birth to age 2), the factors that affect growth, and the effect of the early growth pattern on growth in early childhood (ages 2 to 5).
IRON-DEFICIENCY ANEMIA. Dr. Narins' work on growth includes a study of pediatric antecedents of adolescent and adult obesity. Through her work on obesity and iron intake, Dr. Narins has become very interested in the effect that attitudes and beliefs have on intake, including the quantity and type of food.
NUTRITION. Dr. Narins has also conducted research with the elderly to determine the role of nutrition in keeping them healthier, longer. The aspects of elderly nutrition that she is most knowledgeable include trace mineral (zinc) metabolism, energy, taste, drug-nutrient interactions, and attitudes. She is also very knowledgeable of methods of assessing body composition and foodborne disease. She has an excellent grasp of general nutrition.
