Expert has 22 years of college teaching and research experience, to include posts at several tier one research universities and was recently employed as an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina teaching Geology and Earth Science before going to Mansfield University in Pennsylvania to help develop their Oil and Gas Geology program. He has a varied background as a geoscientist with experience in geology, geomorphology, geography, and spatial sciences, including remote sensing, GIS and spatial analysis. He also has much detailed research and application experience with geology and geography in government and private sectors, working several years with the West Virginia State GIS Technical Center, West Virginia Geological Survey, and the West Virginia Speleological Survey. He has participated in many research projects dealing with a variety of environmental science topics such as monitoring water quality in caves and surface streams, coring sediments for age dating and stratigraphic interpretation, locating abandoned mines and gas wells, etc. His research generally focuses on a broad laundry list of environmental topics but he particularly enjoys researching karst regions, or landforms formed by the dissolution of limestone, particularly the geohazards and impacts in those karst environments, including sinkholes, landslides and caves. He is an avid caver of both vertical and horizontal caves and incorporates this topic into his research and publication regime. Also recently his research has created a morphometric and geomorphic analysis of Carolina Bays, a phenomena common to the Carolinas, where elliptical features show common orientation with unknown origin. Another geophysical method he has explored in recent years is Ground Penetrating Radar, used to determine subsurface structure, such as sinkholes, caves, glacial reconstructions, etc. Current projects include LIDAR mapping of caves, compiling a database of abandoned gas wells in Central Pennsylvania, and a multi-year environmental monitoring of Maxwelton Sink cave system, which is being rapidly urbanized. Expert has dual bachelors degrees in Political Science and Geoscience from Concord University, a Masters degree in Physical Geography and Geology from West Virginia University and a Doctorate in Physical Geography and Geology from Employer with a focus on sinkholes, so his research, teaching, and expertise are found in a broad range of environmental science and geoscience topics.
