Expert in Fastener Engineering
Expert actually began his fastener career as a machine operator running all the various types of fastener making machinery. He evolved to design the tooling for those machines, inspecting/testing the products, and eventually running the engineering and quality functions of fastener plants before being elevated to executive roles.
Expert is a true expert in fastener quality. This part of his background started when he was an inspector and gage setter in a fastener plant. He went on to become a quality engineer and then ultimately having an engineering and quality staff of 27 at one of the largest fastener companies in the world. He has assessed the quality of more than 100 fastener manufacturing plants around the globe.
Expert has exceptional experience with hex head bolts. In fact all of the current NASCAR teams count on hex bolts he designed.
Expert is one of the leading experts with high-strength bolts. He designed an entire line of high-strength bolts for the largest direct-to-user supplier of maintenance supplies. That covered 1/4" through 1 1/4" diameter products. He also has a significant background with high-strength aerospace bolts of various materials.
Expert's experience with locknuts is extensive having four United States Patents with a total of 56 claims and all four of them included locknuts. He also designed a line of locknuts to go with the high-strength bolts he designed for a very large fastener distributor. He has a newly designed locknut that is waiting for patent protection before going to market.
Almost all of Expert's work is with mechanical fasteners and the companies that make or sell them. Solving the failures of mechanical fasteners is Expert's renowned specialty.
Expert has served for many years on the fastener standards committees. That is, ASME B18 and ASTM F16. A few years back he also gained membership into ASTM E30, Forensic Sciences, so as to lend his expertise with fasteners into standards dealing with legal issues.
Part of determining what fastener should be used in an application is figuring out the strength of the threads. Expert does this routinely when designing fasteners or learning how a fastener broke.
Expert frequently is involved with the testing of screw threads. The threads act like a spring in an application and produce the holding power. Therefore, the threads must be tested to know if the screw can do its job properly.
Expert was previously the Director of Engineering of SPS Unbrako. This is the company that invented the socket head cap screw. As such, he is considered the leading technical expert on these products, and still assists the company as a consultant.
Expert has done a lot of work with square nuts and bolts because he worked with the railroad industry who have been very slow in considering hex nuts and bolts. However, because of this Expert invented a fastener system for railroad tracks that use square nuts and bolts that performed better in testing trials than any fasteners they had ever used before. That system was then patented.
Expert's work has been primarily with threaded fasteners. This has involved most if not all of the types of threads seen in standards. A comprehension of the combination of materials and threads and their components is needed to determine the strength that can be designed into a fastened joint. Expert excels in morphing these attributes to create a product that will function properly.
This topic falls under what the fastener industry calls Applications Engineering. The tightening of the fastener is one important facet of that discipline. There are several ways to go about it, but the end result is to develop what is know as clampforce. That is, a pressure that is developed by tightening the bolt or nut that is greater than the service loads that the joint will receive. Expert knows exactly how to deal with each given situation.
This type of equipment is escentially a hydraulic load cell, whereby when a nut or bolt is tightened in the machine a developed load created is displayed typically in pounds. Expert was the co-inventor of the first digital readout tester of this type and still uses it when conducting fastener training classes and evaluating some products.
