Expert managed a tire components development group for a major synthetic rubber supplier for 15 years. During this time he personally established a state-of-the-art fatigue laboratory to assess the fatigue crack growth resistance of various elastomers, compounds, and blends of elastomers. Expert's 10 presentations and publications in this field from are recognized as some of the most useful to those who are concerned with establishing rubber fatigue testing and understanding the practical aspects of fracture mechanics as they apply to rubber components in service. As an invited speaker Expert has presented rubber fatigue papers at the ACS Rubber Division, The Gordon Research Conference, SAE, The Akron Rubber Group, Akron University Elastomer Service Life Symposia, and a Brazilian Rubber Congress. He was awarded the Best Paper Award for his Rubber Division paper on fatigue. Throughout his industrial career he enjoyed collaborating with scientists and engineers from a wide variety of tire companies, other suppliers, private testing laboratories and the U.S. Army. Expert served as Chairman of the ASTM Committee F-9 on Tire Testing, and as an Associate Editor of Rubber Chemistry and Technology.

Expert is actively engaged in on-site and electronic interactions with a major belt manufacturer to improve the fatigue life of their belts which are quite large and involved in a high speed commercial process. He has recently (1st Quarter '01) conducted a technology review for a major petroleum additives manufacturer.

Government Experience

Years Agency Role Description
Years: 1990 to Present Agency: US Army Materials Research Command Role: Materials Researcher Description: Expert conducted fracture mechanics based fatigue studies on thre tank track pad materials at the request of the U.S. Army. These were for the M-1 Tank. Tests were conducted in his laboratory at Exxon Chemical Company as a cooperative program to assist the Army. Results were released for presentation January 24, 1991 to the Akron Rubber Group and were published in April of 1991 in Rubber World.

International Experience

Years Country / Region Summary
Years: 1970 to 1972 Country / Region: Japan Summary: Expert served as a technical and market development consultant to the Exxon Chemical synthetic rubber division in Japan. This involved three- to four-week trips every quarter for two and one-half years. He learned rudimentary Japanese and became knowledgeable about Japanese customs and culture. Each trip involved multiple meetings with Japanese customers.
Years: 1991 to 1993 Country / Region: Brazil Summary: He made two trips to Brazil to present papers on fatigue technology; while there he met with four to six major customers each trip to discuss their diverse technical needs. This necessitated becoming knowledgeable about a wide range of rubber products and applications in which he did not usually work.
Years: 1968 to 1968 Country / Region: Europe Summary: Following an intensive one and one-half year machine development project, he visited all the major tire companies in Europe to present basic process research he had conducted. A $50,000 machine was based on this research and several thousand were sold to the tire industry by companies which Exxon licensed to produce them. He received a rare bonus for this work.
