He has performed analyses to determine price and performance requirements for fiber optic products and products to be used by fiber optic manufacturers. Additionally, he has designed equipment to produce fibers and cables.
Expert's wide range and depth of connector experience leads many to consider him a fiber optic connect. He has installed, or supervised the installation of, more than 33,000 connectors of multiple styles by various methods. He has trained more than 3,500 personnel in proper installation methods. He has evaluated all the major styles (including the small form factor connectors) and installation methods. His product experience includes: ST-compatible, SC, FC, FDDI, SMA 905, SMA 906, LC, Volition, MT-RJ, OptiJack, biconic and mini BNC, He has trained sales personnel in the installation and selling of fiber optic connector products. He has experience with the following installation methods: epoxy, Hot Melt™, four different quick cure/anaerobic adhesives, epoxyless, polishless, cleave and leave. He has experience with products from AMP, Amphenol, 3M, Siecor, ATT/Lucent, Methode Electronics, Thomas and Betts, Ensign-Bickford, Molex, OFTI, Panduit and others. He has worked with connectors for glass, POF and HCS fibers.
Expert has extensive experience in machine and hand grinding of fiber optic connectors. He has trained thousands of personnel for both field and factory grinding of connectors for both low loss and low reflectance. He has advised clients on equipment and procedures for fiber grinding.
He has developed polishing procedures for both multimode and singlemode connectors. He was the first in North America to train personnel in field hand polishing of singlemode connectors for reflectances below -50 dB. He developed and refined more than twelve polishing procedures tuned to the connector being installed and the performance goals desired. He has developed three unique polishing techniques for clients' use in their cable assembly factories. He has published four of his procedures in one chapter of "The Complete Guide to Fiber Optic Cable System Installation."
Expert's experience includes development of components for secure communications systems. He designed and developed the first cables installed in the Strategic Defense Initiative headquarters in 1985. He is familiar with NSA requirements for secure transmission links and for DOD/Department of State requirements for TEMPEST rating.
Expert made his first fusion splice in 1978. Since that time, he has made more than 3,000 fusion splices on both multimode and singlemode fibers. He has spliced fiber from Corning Cable Systems, Spectran, Alcatel and Plasma. He has evaluated and troubleshot fusion splicing problems. His company, Expert Technologies Incorporated, currently owns five fusion splicers for training purposes. Expert certifies trainees for advanced skills in splicing.
Expert has managed two fiber manufacturing facilities which produced graded index multimode fiber. At both facilities, he developed the processes for high bandwidth, low attenuation fiber. This development required understanding of issues of materials, calibration and control of temperature and flow. At both facilities, he managed significant improvements of both fiber performance and manufacturing cost.

He managed the design and development of both the facility and the equipment for the manufacture of the fibers. He continuously consults with optical fiber cable manufacturers on both technical and marketing issues.
Managed a fiber manufacturing facility during the technology transfer stage for Corning Glass Works.He managed the development of manufacturing capabilities for optical fiber and optical fiber cables for Times Fiber Communications.He managed the start-up of a business division to provide optical fiber cable and cable assemblies. He also developed system design capabilities for this client.
