Expert is an expert in fire protection engineering. His clients include fire protection equipment manufacturers and distributors, industrial production firms, insurance companies, and law firms. He has worked on projects related to product design, system design, technical writing, technical analysis, site surveys, hazard and risk analysis, and expert testimony.

The BOCA National Fire Code is the most commonly referenced code in the states where the majority of Expert's design and litigation support activities occur.

Expert maintains that explosions or fires in pneumatic conveyance ducts usually result from the ignition of a combustible vapor, gas, or dust within the duct. Expert has performed several investigations of such incidents and reconstructed the process and progress of the event from the physical evidence at the fire site.

Expert has performed several investigations of explosions where he has reconstructed the process and progress of the event from the physical evidence at the site. He does limit his work to explosions that are the result of a combustion reaction, either a deflagration or a detonation. He does not work on other chemical reactions or over-pressurization ruptures. As a principal member of the NFPA Technical Committee on the Fundamentals of Dusts, Expert routinely offered insight into events that have occurred at the sites operated by other committee member's firms.

Expert's practice includes the design of fire detection and suppression systems to manage the fire risks represented by a facility, consistent with the goals and objectives of the facility operator. He has served litigants in the analysis of fire protection systems, determining why they failed in the manner they did.
