Expert J. Expert, Ph.D., F.A.A.M., F.I.F.T., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Food Science at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Expert received his Ph.D. from M.I.T., his B.S. from Rutgers, and was a Senior Research Microbiologist at the United States Department of Agriculture before joining the Rutgers faculty. He is an internationally recognized expert on matters related to food science and technology. He has served as both Director of the Graduate Program and Chair of the Department of Food Science. Expert is Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Food Safety, served on many editorial boards, and has published over 100 highly cited peer-reviewed papers, 16 chapters, and 10 books, including the widely-adopted undergraduate text book, Food Microbiology: an Introduction. Expert has reduced complex concepts in food science to simple lay language for thousands of liberal arts undergraduates in his course, The Science of Food. He has consulted for major food companies and has provided numerous expert opinions for complex litigations involving natural claims, foodborne illness, as well as theft of trade secrets. Expert is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology (A.A.M.) and a Fellow of the Institute of Food Technologist (F.I.F.T). The IFT awarded Expert the Bernard L. Oser Award for Food Ingredient Safety. He received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association for Food Protection. He is an endurance athlete.
