Expert is an internationally-reknowned research professor with extensive expertise and experience in the area of human responses to alarms and warnings. This includes both speech and non-speech (buzzer-type) auditory warnings and written warnings labels. She has a 25-year research career, including many publications, across these areas and has an in-depth understanding of the factors which affect how people respond to warnings and alarms. She has had a major influence in several ISO standards and other important technical documents related to alarms and warnings. Many of the alarms and warnings now seen and heard in public life have been generated either directly by Expert or by others using the evidence-based research she has carried out. She also has extensive experience of auditory alarm design in both industry and the public sector. She has designed auditory alarms for medical care, trains, aircraft and nuclear power stations. She has also advised on the design of written labels in many domains, including the medical domain.
