Expert has worked in the field of visual perception for over 35 years. His primary interest is on how vision operates in the natural world. This includes consideration of how visual scenes are judged to be different or similar to each other; how experts detect abnormalities in visual human behaviour, e.g. in CCTV surveillance situations; the visibility of signals and signs, particularly in the rail industry; the design of camouflage; image fusion. Expert has been a consultant for the UK rail and defence industry. He is Managing Editor of the journals "Perception" and "i-Perception". He is an expert in designing studies using psychophysical techniques, particularly to study visual performance in complex tasks. He has published over 80 papers, and has co-authored one book on vision and perception.
