Request Expert

Prof. Expert earned his Ph.D. in Water Resources and Environmental Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research covers a range of technical interests in hydrology and water resources, from theoretical to computational to technological, on fundamental as well as applied problems. His innovative integration of scientific hydrology, applied mathematics, computational sciences, “big data”, and information technologies has advanced the ability of the hydrological community to model complex groundwater systems and expanded the utility of modeling as a tool for research, education, and professional investigation. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States of Geological Survey, the Great Lakes Protection Fund, and local government agencies, industries, and citizen groups. Prof. Expert is an associate editor for the ASCE Journal of Hydrologic Engineering, the National Groundwater Association's Journal of Ground Water, and the Journal of Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment. He is a registered professional engineer and an elected Fellow of both the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Geological Society of America.

Prof. Expert has applied his hydrogelogy and groundwater modeling background to water resources management, site characterization, pollution control, contamination impact analysis, as well as, protection of drinking water resources and groundwater dependent streams, lakes, wetlands, and ecosystems. He has recently developed a new, enabing technology that has substantially reduced the costs of groundwater related investigations. In particular, he has developed a "data-enabled" modeling and visualization system that allows one to zoom in anywhere in Michigan to predict and visualize groundwater flow and contaminant transport. The system is live linked to a massive database containing information on Michigan's streams, lakes, wetlands, water wells, well lithologies, glacial geology, bedrock geology, sites of environmental concern, sensitive natural community and endangered species. The visual modeling system is also linked to a global geographical information system database.
