OPTICAL MATERIALS. Expert performs research in the areas of integrated optics and optoelectronics, nonlinear optics, and optical material characterization. He has studied compound semiconductors and polymers in optical waveguide structures, some of which incorporate nanostructures to enhance optical nonlinearities. Research directed at sensor applications involves optical waveguide devices formed on silicon in conjunction with micromechanical structures, silicon carbide photodiode characterization, and electric field sensors formed on lithium niobate. He uses material characterization techniques such as Raman microprobe spectroscopy, photoluminescence, optical waveguide loss measurements, and near field scanning optical microscopy. Theoretical modeling and design of channel waveguide structures using beam propagation method software is being performed to support many aspects of this experimentation.

INTEGRATED OPTICS; INTEGRATED OPTOELECTRONICS; OPTICAL WAVEGUIDES. Expert has been conducting research in integrated optics for 25 years, publishing over 250 papers. He has investigated device structures using various materials including GaAs, GaAlAs, InP, LiNbO3, silicon oxy-nitride films, SI3N4 films, and glass films. He has significant theoretical experience to complement experimental experience with the materials mentioned above including analysis of planar optical waveguides (various configurations), channel optical waveguides, and channel waveguide structures.

GALLIUM ARSENIDE (GaAlAs) SEMICONDUCTORS. Expert has worked with GaAs and GaAlAs multiple layer material structures. Optical waveguides have been designed and fabricated. The materials have been characterized by photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, and optical waveguide loss measurements. Superlattice mixing has been studied as well as nonlinear optical effects in these materials.
