Request Expert

Expert is experienced in the application of basic sciences to clinical and biomedical problems. Most recently, his interests have centered on infectious diseases, concentrating on pathogen-host interactions and biomaterials with special emphasis on biocompatibility.

Expert's laboratory has recently elucidated the importance of adsorbed host proteins in the inflammatory response to polymeric biomaterials. There is ongoing research into the molecular bases of adverse responses to biomaterials and the synthesis of new biocompatible surfaces for medical devices.

Expert's laboratory has been involved in the development of novel diagnostic test procedures, including one for whooping cough (U.S. Patent). Expert also has developed several new procedures to solve specific biomedical problems. These include the addition of Vitamin C to hemodialysis solutions to prevent chlorine-induced oxidant destruction of red blood cells, the clinical use of iron-binding proteins to suppress hemoglobin-driven bacterial infections (U.S. Patent), the development of a novel technique for the synthesis of immobilized iron chelators (U.S. Patent), and albumin-binding biomaterials (U.S. Patent). Expert has consulted in a variety of areas including diagnostic test development, biomaterials (compatibility and stability), and cellular oxidation and reduction reactions.

Expert's past experience includes work on the pathogenesis of red cell disorders, cell membrane function, and a number of problems concerning biological oxidation and reduction reactions. Expert is also knowledgeable in toxicology, cellular regulation, enzymology, and blood flow.
