Expert has spent over 35 years in increasingly responsible positions in the power transformer industry working in the areas of design, design review, development, testing, inspection, field service, failure analysis and training. Expert has experience in both liquid filled and dry type transformers and has worked on transformers rated between 75 kVA to 300 MVA up to 230 kV, 1050 kV BIL. Expert has been employed in the transformer field by Westinghouse Medium Power Transformer Division and Repair Services Division, Smit Transformers USA, Delta Star, Virginia Transformer and Pacific Crest Transformers (formerly Areva). Expert is a Senior Life Member of the IEEE and an active voting Committee Member of the IEEE Transformers Committee.

Expert has actively designed and managed the transformer design function. Expert is a specialist in the design and development of power transformers with a concentration on winding design and its ability to withstand lightning impulses and short circuit forces. Expert has personally designed two, three and four winding transformers, autotransformers, rectifier transformers and grounding transformers. Many of the transformers Expert has designed included units with load tap changers in either the HV or LV winding utilizing both reactor and resistance type LTCs. Expert has an application knowledge of transformer fluids, cooling methods, mechanical construction and accessories.

Expert has concentrated knowledge of the transformer manufacturing and testing processes having been responsible for the management of both during his career. Knowledge has been focused on quality approaches to manufacturing and testing processes with special attention applied to winding methods, drying processes and core stacking methods. Since testing is critical to validate a particular design, Expert has extensive experience in performing all the standard tests including impulse, partial discharge and sound level.

Expert has been actively involved in the field of evaluating transformer failures, whether they occurred in the factory during routine tests or in the field after years of service. Expert spent five years managing the engineering function applied to redesigning, repairing and upgrading the capability of power transformers that had failed. Each repair was evaluated and the most probable cause of failure was determined based on client supplied knowledge and understanding gained during the disassembly of the transformer.

Expert has participated as an expert witness and technical resource for attorneys. Expert has given both deposition and court testimony as the technical representative of his company. Expert has provided technical evaluations of failure incidents based on available data, testimony and photographs supplied by others. Expert was a corporate director of product safety for three years.


Provided technical guidance to testing equipment manufacturer that assisted them in developing a new product. Was able to guide them in several areas unique to transformer construction that allowed them to proceed with more certainty as to the construction of the final product.Provided expert information and guidance in a litigation involving a failed transformer. Was brought in well after the incident and asked to assess the existing testimony, documentation and photographs and determine from a technical standpoint whether defendant could properly defend his product and position. Summarized findings and most probable cause of failure in a comprehensive detailed expert's report which was praised as a "high end" product.
