Expert received a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), with an emphasis in composite manufacture and analysis. His Ph.D. dissertation dealt with manufacturing analysis for axisymmetric composite structures. Part of the research included building a graphite-epoxy composite pressure vessel, finite element analysis, and subsequent destructive testing to compare predicted stress levels to actual results. A composite shell was then built and used for a meteorological study carried out by the UCB Physics Department.

He is highly proficient in AutoCAD and SolidWorks. He has extensive experience in machinery design and solid modeling. He is a "Certified SolidWorks Professional," having completed three courses in SolidWorks and a rigorous examination demonstrating proficiency in parts, assemblies, surfaces, sheet metal design, and drawings. He is an active member in the SolidWorks community in the San Diego area, continuously learning and improving his expertise. Expert also has significant experience in many computer aided design applications such as MathCAD, Working Model, Cosmos, LabView, Excel, and Lotus.

Expert was employed for eight years in the Hollow Fiber Membranes Department of The Dow Chemical Company. His duties included design, development and testing of hollow fiber spinning of solvent-based polymer systems. He also was involved in coextrusion of thermoplastics for polymer optical fiber applications. His expertise is in design of the spinneret, but his knowledge extends throughout the extrusion process, as well as post-processing of the hollow fibers to create a porous, semi-permeable membrane capable of separating air into its two major components: oxygen and nitrogen.

He has significant experience in the design of food processing equipment. He worked for Jif-Pak Manufacturing, Inc., in Carlsbad, California, as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. Jif-Pak makes casing nets for processing of hams and other meat products. He was responsible for designing pneumatic equipment for stuffing the nets and removing them from hams after the smoking process. The work involved sheet metal design, stainless steel framing, and pneumatic components to provide machines that were rugged, easily cleaned, efficient, and capable of high throughput.

He worked in the "Polyolefins Research" group of The Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas. His particular emphasis was in flexible packaging. He is very knowledgeable in multilayer coextrusion of cast and blown films. He is the co-owner a US patent which deals with the method for improving the bond strength of certain polymers to polyimides. Some of the work involved improving the method for production of blown films, including special techniques for producing Saran™ films and packaging products.

Expert received a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He studied under Professor Nam P. Suh in the Polymer Processing Program, part of the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity. He has extensive knowledge in polymer extrusion, injection molding, thermoforming, films, fibers, molecular orientation, and polymer crosslinking mechanisms.

He was responsible for the design, development and testing of a nested PID temperature control system for a blood monitoring system.Designed and fabricated a high-tech fabric coating line.Design and fabrication of a processing line for a hollow fiber membrane air separation system.Design, fabrication and analysis of a handheld anthrax detectorMechanical design of an inline photographic blood analyzer
