Request Expert

Expert has worked in this field for 30 years. His PhD concerned discontinuous fibre composite properties and fracture behaviour. He has published extensively in this area. He worked in research, production, product development and management in the chemical industry - chiefly for ICI, and led a Mechanical Properties, Rheology and Tribology team for 12 years. In this time, Expert developed patents in novel mechanical techniques and conducted research in bulk polymers, films and coatings, specialist coatings and paints, structural and pressure sensitive adhesives, lubricants, injection moulding polymers. Expert was secretary to and chaired the IUPAC Subcommittee on 'Structure and Properties of Commercial Plastics' for a number of years. Expert is a member of the ESIS Technical committee for polymer testing.

He has consulted on an issue with a medical device that cracked during it's use. This was found to be due to the mould design which brought about residual stresses. Recommendations were made to refine the design and eradicated the problem.A coatings company needed advice in making fracture toughness measurements. The geometry and measurements were analysed and recommendations for making the measurements made. This resulted in data that could be relied upon. It was independently checked and found to be valid. An adhesives company had problems with the equipment used to coat paper at high speeds. He identified that the lubrication characteristics of the adhesive in the rollers at high pressure made a difference to the lifetime of the roller coating equipment. He carried out a systematic study of glass fibre strengths from leading suppliers. It was shown that the handling and packaging of the glass fibre was critical. Measures were taken to redesign the packaging and this resulted in the fibres being more robust saving £2m.An adhesive issue was identified in TFT computer screens. He identified the critical adhesive and interface and worked with the companies involved (with each) to improve the issue.

Marketing Experience
In the Polymer industry over 25 years there have been many divestments, restructuring and cost reduction exercises. The strategic direction of a major chemical company is always in flux and key professional people have to adapt and become used to change. This has resulted in a robust, but highly adaptable individual. It is important to recognise situations in which change is needed, but to stand up and be counted where core values must be upheld.
Other Relevant Experience
A talent for grooming presentation skills and presentation material. Enthusiasm and Coaching for success.
