Expert started and ran a mechanical seal research program at the University of New Mexico under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation and the US Navy for 15 years. This work served as the basis for numerous papers, reports, and inventions, including an influential full-length book published in 1991. In 1987 Expert started a company in this space to conduct research and product development, design software development, and consulting on mechanical seals. Throughout the past 20 years he has developed and supported software for the seal industry that is widely used for the design and analysis of mechanical seals. He is currently active with seal software development and consulting at his company.

His primary research areas is microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). He is primarily concerned with the development of micromachines and related technologies for electronic, biomedical, and industrial applications.

Expert has had over 17 years of experience in microfabrication. This includes multiproject integrated circuit manufacture, process integration, and silicon micromachining. He is currently involved with new process technology development for microelectromechanical systems. These include thin film piezoelectric actuators and fabrication of high aspect ratio microstructures.

Expert has developed several innovative technologies for the fabrication and application of microelectromechanical systems. These systems include micromechanical fastening systems ("micro-velcro") for joining biologic tissues; devices to inject DNA into cells; sputter deposition of piezoelectric thin films; high-aspect-ratio microstructures using anodic metal oxides; integrated MEMS using foundry supplied CMOS chips and post-processing; control of liquid bridging induced stiction using geometric tabs in released structures.

Expert also has familiarity with bearing, classical dynamics, computer modeling, finite element analysis training, gasket, gear, hydraulic packing, leakage, mechanical power transmission, pressure, repairing, rigid-body dynamics, statics, and stress analysis.

He has served as President of a seal consulting company for nearly 30 years.

Expert may consult nationally and internationally, and is also local to the following cities: Albuquerque, New Mexico - Rio Rancho, New Mexico
