Expert in Metallurgical Electrochemistry
Expert's research, teaching, and consulting have involved a high level of effort in optimizing processes for extraction and recycling of metals. His expertise lies in the thermodynamic analysis of processes and identifying bottlenecks caused by poor reaction kinetics. He also holds industrial contacts in much of the world's metals industry.
Expert's research at MIT and consulting efforts have focused upon molten salt chemistry. His specialties include thermodynamic and transport properties of molten salts. In addition, his industrial experience through consulting qualifies him to interpret industrial practice in terms of the fundamental engineering science.
At MIT, Expert has taught virtually all the subjects pertaining to the thermodynamics of chemical reactions. In addition, his research and consulting rely heavily upon the use of thermochemistry.
A significant portion of Expert's research uses voltametry and other related electrochemical techniques of analysis. He holds a patent on a reference electrode permitting voltametric studies in aluminum-bearing molten salts. He also teaches the only course at MIT in electrochemistry where voltametry in presented in detail.
Expert is developing new technologies with the potential to treat hazardous waste by electrochemical processing at high temperatures. To date he has looked at chromate sludge which is typical of much industrial waste from the metals and chemicals industries.
This technique is becoming very popular in electrochemistry circles. He uses this technique in his own research to analyze the kinetics of electrochemical reactions and to measure such properties as electrical conductivity and dielectric constant of a material- liquid or solid.
