Request Expert

Since entering the field in 1973, Expert has become one of the foremost experts on the application of metric (SI) units and international (metric) standards. He has helped over 100 companies and government agencies adopt metric practices. He has written articles and published a book on SI. Additionally, he has trained employees including CEOs, design engineers, contractors, educators, inspectors, and workers, and developed a multitude of seminars to fit various positions and industries. Among these courses are metric drafting, blueprint reading, spec writing, SI units, ISO fits and tolerances, GD&T, machining practices, HVAC, road and building construction, welding symbols, and procurement of metric tools, gages, and materials. As a consultant, Expert writes or updates design and drafting manuals; advises in metric (DIN, EN, ISO, JIS, etc.) and U.S. (ANSI, ASME, ASTM, SAE, etc.) standards; finds metric hardware and materials; facilitates inventory reduction of fasteners, steels and other materials; and helps with harmonization of engineering, procurement and manufacturing practices.

Expert's expertise includes guiding harmonization of engineering, procurement, and manufacturing practices worldwide for corporations operating or cooperating with companies abroad. Through this work and prior employment abroad, he can interpret foreign drawings and standards, establish a program for unification, modernize spec writing, and identify standards a company needs to consider (there may be hundreds). The assistance includes ISO 9000, QS 9000, and AS 9000 families of standards.

Expert consults in the design of fastener joints (type, size, strength, tightening, fatigue, dynamic loads), in recognition and availability of ISO, DIN, ANSI, SAE, EN, JIS, etc. nuts, bolts, pins, retaining rings, splines, couplings, etc., and in inventory reduction (a program within the changeover to metric). Expert can answer in-depth questions about tolerances, finish, pins, nuts, bolts, washers, thread making, inspecting, thread pitches, types of pipe threads, threaded joints potential failures, failure prevention, stretching and tightening devices, and about the suitability of hardware, locking devices, and lubrication for an application.

Expert designed, built, and tested diesel, gasoline, wankel, and steam engines from the size of toys up to 4000 kW. He consulted in dozens of development projects involving commercial, racing, and advanced engines, as well as steam engines for road and air transportation (he is one of the few experts on steam engines left). Expert advises on system and detail design, performance improvement, wear reduction, pistons, rings, valves, springs, cams, valve train dynamics, variable timing (valve motion control), materials, component failures, test methods, test instrumentation, test standards, dynamometers, instrumentation, couplings, auxiliary drives, and vibration. In the area of steam engines, Expert's expertise includes boilers, feed pumps, high temperature materials and lubricants, and engines used for high speed, light weight, or stationary applications.

Expert had worked on compression release engine retarders (JakeBrakes(r)), exhaust brakes, and driveline retarders while employed by the leading manufacturer of these devices. He has obtained patents and consults in the development and adoption of such devices in a range of applications.

Expert has participated in the development of diesel injection pumps and injectors, and in their modifications for other purposes such as precision metering or engine valve motion control. He has followed the developments in this field for 30 years. He has built several testing laboratories for gasoline, steam, and diesel engines used for production as well as research. He consults in the selection of engines, dynamometers, drive-shafts, couplings, and instrumentation and has published articles internationally on drive-lines and block foundation vibration. Alongside, he has developed and patented new testing equipment.

Expert consults in machinery vibration, including vibration suppression devices, torsional couplings, block foundations, balancing, and troubleshooting. With couplings and drive-lines, he specializes on torsional vibration, rotor inertia impact, coupling stiffness, resiliency, angularity, parallel misalignment, and design of foundations, as well as installation of rotating machinery such as dynamometers, turbines, and fans. He has testified in product disputes and litigation.

Expert has introduced FMEA to a score of companies in the US and abroad. He delivers speeches, seminars, and workshops, and he consults in writing and applying FMEAs in a wide range of industries. He has contributed to the technique by developing alternative procedures, forms, and one of the early software programs. He publishes articles and papers and lectures at conferences. He assists clients in implementing FMEA on its own or as a part of QS 9000 and TQM, and he reviews FMEA documents for correctness and completeness.

Expert has provided sourcing assistance for the U.S./Central Europe exchange (Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia). He can work with most European technical documentation and interpret it for U.S. counterparts in marketing, purchasing, engineering, and manufacturing. Likewise, he interprets U.S. inch- and pound-based manufacturing documentation for the European counterparts. This work includes drafting and design practices, machining and inspection processes

Having consulted for some 100 companies in size from Fortune 10 to small machine shops, he provides training in metrication and FMEA, helping in the development of electro-mechanical and hydro-mechanical devices, mostly in the heat engine field.
