Expert has broad expertise in biogeochemistry at a variety of scales. He has studied carbon and nitrogen cycling from deserts to forests, and Arctic tundra. He is especially knowledgeable in linking microbial community composition and function to biogeochemical processes. He currently serves as Secretary for the Biogeosciences Section of the Ecological Society of America.

Expert has a PhD in Ecology in Duke University. He has broad training in ecology, and is immersed in cutting-edge ecological research.

Expert has broad training and experience in environmental microbiology. He utilizes a variety of genomic and proteomic techniques to examine microbial communities and processes in a variety of environments.

Expert has a broad research program in microbial ecology. In particular, his lab examines the role of microbial community structure in driving processes. He examines how microbial physiological responses to environmental stress affects their functioning.

Expert began using molecular biology tools early in his research career. He utilizes a wide-range of tools, and understands their limitations, their mis-use, and how to interpret them. His expertise includes (but is not limited to) PCR, sequencing, cloning, DNA fingerprinting, microarrays, protein identification, RNA, quantitative PCR.

Expert has experience in a wide range of soils including acidic weathered forest soils, aridland soils, organic rich tundra soils, and agricultural soils.
