Expert has expertise in the design and development of spectroscopic instrumentation, particularly in the near-infrared spectral region. He was on the design team for several of the instruments produced by a major manufacturer. He was the chief system troubleshooter, integrating his knowledge of electronics, optics, system design, spectroscopy, and computer programming.

Expert has a great deal of experience in the application of infrared and near-infrared spectrometers to the solution of particular analytical problems, including feasibility studies, calibration generation, qualitative analysis, calibration transferability, troubleshooting, training, and conducting demonstrations.

Expert has extensive experience developing chemometric algorithms, many of which were designed and implemented through computer software. He developed the Mahalonobis Distance Concept now used extensively for qualitative analysis. He is also experienced in the techniques of statistical experimental design, ANOVA, and statistical hypothesis testing.

With his experience in the design and development of analytical instruments, Expert has gained expertise in methods of instrument calibration. His writings on calibration methods have appeared in books and technical publications.

Expert has advised clients on methods of collecting, organizing, and analyzing data, including the "statistical experimental designer" when appropriate. He uses standard software when available and writes custom programs when necessary. The analysis can be simple classification to complex statistical analysis, depending on the problem and the use of t, F, and X(2) tests, as well as other standard statistics.

For the last 20 years, Expert has studied various multivariate calibration methods in common use, including PLS, PCR, and MLR, mostly applying the methods to spectroscopic data; this work is what chemometrics is all about.

Expert notes that “computerized spectroscopy” is an umbrella term covering many aspects of the modern application of spectroscopic analysis, particularly near-infrared analysis. Expert has been involved with all aspects of application of computers to spectroscopic measurement since the mid-1960s. He has modified instruments to implement computer control and written software to control instruments and collect data in both research and industrial settings. He is a world-renowned expert in the application of modern statistical and chemometric methods of data analysis to spectroscopic data. He has created software for this purpose for clients, and also for data analysis packages of his own manufacture.

He started his professional career by learning in depth about, and applying, MLR, the method of multivariate analysis in longest existence, at a time when the more advanced techniques of PCR and PLS. These three algorithms are currently the primary mathematical techniques used for of chemical data analysis, although PCR and PLS were not yet introduced to the field of chemical analysis when he entered the field. Since then he has applied all three techniques, to say nothing about keeping abreast of more recent developments, to practical problem-solving for various clients. Therefore he is well-versed in both the practical and theoretical aspects of the various methods used for multivariate analysis.

Expert worked with a manufacturer of a well-known pharmaceutical product to help implement near-infrared spectroscopy in the laboratory environment and ongoing to initiate their transition into converting their operations to conform to the new PAT initiative of the FDA. He developed protocols for validation of NIR methodology. He assisted a manufacturer of products for the semiconductor industry to develop a sensor for controlling the process; successful operation of the sensor was based on real-time analysis of the complex data produced. He developed a complete control software package for a key product of an instrument manufacturer, integrating instrument control, data collection, and data analysis to form a self-contained package.
