Request Expert

Expert has worked for over 20 years in industrial R&D on a variety of advanced functional materials primarily for photonics and electronics applications. After several years of work in vertically nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett films for nonlinear optics, he was an initiator of one of the first industrial teams in Europe (Hoechst AG, later Covion Organic Semiconductors, now Merck OLED materials) to work on polymer electroluminescent devices for electroluminescent panels and OLED (organic light-emitting diode) lighting, and has continued to be involved in this field as an expert reviewer for the European Commission. He also co-developed novel OLEDs emitting polarised light based on oriented liquid crystalline organic semiconductors while at Sony Europe, and was a co-inventor of a novel organic photovoltaic material using discotic liquid crystal phases to define and control lateral nanostructure. While at Hoechst, he also initiated and ran a project on solid-state dye-sensitised solar cells based on nanostructured titania and incorporating novel amorphous organic semiconductor charge transport materials.
As head of display R&D at Ntera Ltd. he developed expertise in bistable, high contrast paper-like displays and led the development of high contrast, fast switching bistable electrochomic display devices comprising nanostructured metal oxide electrode films printed from nanoparticle inks. As a technology advisor to UPM Kymmene Corporate Venturing he introduced electrophoretic display media to the venture and was involved in bringing the activity from a lab-based feasibility study through development of processes for a fully roll-to-roll printed and manufactured flexible electronic price label. He also obtained experience in the use of anisotropc adhesives for system assenbly, which he deepened later with other customers in fields such as flexible photovoltaics. Through his many years of activities in the display field he has been a long-time member of the Scociety for Information Display and attended the annual conference regulary.
Over the last 8 years Expert has become increasingly involved in the field of organic, printed and large area electronics, developing fully printed high speed rectifiers and active matrix display backplanes, advising customers in the fields of novel thin-film devices and printable memories, and been active as a core editorial team member in the development of the Organic Electronics Associaion roadmap.
Expert is author of 35 scientific publications and inventor on over 40 patents and patent applications.
