Optical Fibers and Telecommunications: FTTx, Field Testing Transmission Systems, Design, Research

ID: 724728 Arizona, USA

Request Expert

Expert began R & D work on optical fiber and fiber communication systems in 1970. At the time he had spent the previous 10 years on the design of microwave relay systems. When the potential of fibers became apparent, a separate research effort was begun at Bell Labs that included some of his people. He transferred to lead groups that worked on both the exploratory development and final development of paired cable and coaxial cable digital transmission systems. In the 80's, with the break-up of the integrated Bell System, he returned to optical fiber work. He was appointed District Supervisor of an optical fiber systems research group in Bellcore. During the 80's his group contributed significantly to the fund of knowledge that now has become the current high-growth fiber area known as FTTx (Fiber-to-the-(home, curb, node, etc.). He retired from Bellcore in 1990 to accept a teaching position in the Electrical Engineering Department of Embry-Riddle Aeromautical University, Prescott, AZ.

Expert spent 30 years at Bell Labs researching, designing, developing, and field testing transmission systems. His knowledge of radio and cable systems design, modulation techniques, transmission degradations/ limitations, and costs is both broad and deep. One of his strengths lies in his ability to understand the details of design of different communications systems and the trade-offs involved in their use. Another lies in his ability to distill these usually complex relationships down to simple, easily understood concepts. This served him well when he left R & D work to teach at a University in 1990.

Expert started his second career in 1990 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, teaching various EE courses. He developed an optical fiber course and has taught it every year since about 1994. Teaching at the university level was not difficult for him since he always was good at, and liked, communicating complex concepts to people. He stopped teaching full-time in 1998 and wrote a book to use in his teaching - and also to be used by practicing engineers in need of an understanding of optical fiber technology. He still teaches part-time at the University and as a consultant.

Array

Sponsored by Bell Atlantic, he taught optical fiber, electronics and communication technology at ATT and Western Electric locations in the Phoenix area.At Wulfsberg Electronics, Prescott Az., he developed and taught courses on basic electronics and Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) to hourly employees. For GHz Communications Co., he did studies on MMDS and LMDS radio distribution systems, Also, he recommended equipment for these applications.
