Expert has expertise in chemistry, especially in the area of sulfur chemistry. His research interests include synthetic and mechanistic chemistry with an emphasis on organosulfur, selenium, phosphorus, silicon, and tin molecules. He is particularly interested in new methods of synthesis. Expert is also adept in computer simulations and calculations. He has been invited to present nearly 500 lectures to conferences, universities, schools, and groups on chemistry and organic chemistry. Courses he has taught include Organic Chemistry (at all levels) and General Chemistry, as well as Special Topics and Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry.

Awards / Recognition
Expert received the Union Carbide Award for Chemical Education and the McGill University Faculty of Science Leo Yaffe Award for Excellence in Teaching. Expert has also received the Chemical Manufacturer's Association National Catalyst Award and the Royal Society of Canada's McNeil Medal for the Public Awareness of Science. He also received the Edward Leete Award of the American Chemical Society for Teaching and Research. He was awarded the Expert Thompson Award at McGill University for Excellence in Graduate Supervision, the John Timm Award of the New England Association of Chemistry, and the Michael Smith Award by the Government of Canada for the Promotion of Science.
