Expert in Paper/Plastic Web Processing/Handling; Custom Converting Machinery and Drive/Control System Design
Expert has spent most of his career designing and building machines to coat papers and films. Coaters have included narrow (6") to wide (80") and slow (10 fpm) to fast (1600 fpm). Primary coating methods have been Mayer rod, offset gravure, transfer roll, and dip coating. Scope of supply includes turreted unwinds and winders, coating heads, dryers, chill rolls, and remoisturization. This equipment processes acrylic adhesives and silicones. Protective films and release liners are product examples.
For the past 10 years, Expert has been supplying design and installation for direct and offset gravure coating. This work has been for solventless and solvent diluted silicone. Release liners are a product example.
Expert's experience with Mayer rod coating goes back 30 years. Several coating station designs have been developed for use with both papers and films. Approximately 30 rod coating stations using wire wound rods have been designed and built and have been in operation since the early 1970s. Expert has developed variations and refinements to the Mayer rod coating technique including rod holder systems for the absolute reduction of static as a coating flaw eliminator as well as for prevention of fires.
For the past 25 years, Expert has been involved with the design and configuration of convection ovens for the curing of polymers on papers and films. Along with this experience has come the development of drying rate considerations for various coatings, especially emulsion type coatings which exhibit sensitivity to drying rate. Similarly, the quality and completeness of cross-linked systems are affected by the heat transfer rates.
For the past 15 years, Expert has designed or contributed to designs addressing coating size, adhesives, or primary coatings used in the board industry, fine paper laminating, and masking papers and tapes. Product examples are recycled paper board, protective papers, masking tape, and ultra-fine quality heavy papers.
Virtually Expert's whole career has been devoted to web handling. Web materials vary from papers to metals to 9-micron films. Product examples are high temperature metals for catalytic converters, piezo films, and non-woven dryer fabric.
Over the past 40 years, Expert has focused on design and design development for equipment used in the paper and film converting industries. Examples are turreted unwinds, rewinds, Mayer rod coating heads, slitter modifications, and specialty machines to align molecules in film (piezo films).
For the past 20 years, Expert has been specifying, sizing, and installing DC and AC motor drive systems for various coating machinery. Several of the machines have 20 to 26 drive sections. Line speeds vary up to 1600 fpm. The latest large system includes fully automated unwind/rewind and multi-tension zones. The drive system incorporates touch screens, fiber optic communication, and supervisory controls. He has installed AC, DC, and hybrid systems.
A strong skill area for Expert is the design of mechanical components and systems. Most of the equipment designed is to process films and papers. Examples are turreted unwinds and winders for scratch-free window tinting films, 288" wide turreted winder for 60 mil polyethylene films (with auto splicing), and automated splicer/layon heads for turreted winders and slitters.
For the past 30 years, Expert has been supplying equipment design and installation for Mayer rod, offset gravure, 5-roll coating, direct gravure, and roll coating systems. He developed a smooth rod coating system for coating liner board. Masking tape, release liners, and protective films/papers are product examples.
During the past 20 years, Expert has developed designs and processes to coat and dry polyethylene and polyesters with silicones and adhesives. Many of the end products are used in the medical industry. Artificial skin for burn victims is one product example.
Expert has contracted with facilities for on-site inspection relating to process machinery, deficiencies, or operator problems. Reports and/or presentations were prepared to convey findings. Follow-up design modifications have been provided, as necessary.
