Expert's professional life, just over 40 years, has been almost evenly divided between the permanent magnet and rare earth industries. For the last 14 years, he has run a consultancy company serving clients in these industries on a wide variety of technical and commercial projects. His previous employers include Molycorp, Magnequench, Hitachi Magnetics, Crucible Magnetics and Recoma. He is a registered professional engineer, in Pennsylvania and Colorado, holds a B. S. in Physics from Lafayette College and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in Metallurgy and Materials Science. He is a member of the UK Magnetics Society and a life senior member of the IEEE Magnetics Society.

Colleagues say that he is an extremely practical engineer, scientist and businessman. They claim he is equally at home presenting at a scientific conference, creating a SWOT analysis in a business meeting, or anything in between. They would give him high marks for being able to solve complicated problems by breaking them down into manageable pieces and for having the gift of being able to explain complex concepts in a clear and succinct manner.

Some noteworthy outcomes: claustrophobic people and large animals can have an open-MRI without fear or injury, hockey players avoid serious injury when crashing into the goalposts because of a breakaway magnetic device, magnetic measurements are made quickly and nondestructively with a Helmholtz coil and NdFeB alloys are broken up easily with hydrogen decrepitation.

A client was having trouble with the magnets they were buying from China. Expert visited the plant in Ningbo and did an audit. Within a day, he found that the supplier had changed the grade of the material without notifying my client. A client needed a permanent magnet that could withstand being placed in an MRI. Expert searched the literature of available magnets and found the grade of material that would perform the best in the externally applied magnetic field of an MRI. A client was trying to bring a new technology from the university to commercialization. Expert helped both the researchers and the client understand what they needed to do to present their properties and data to potential customers.
