An area of major work has been in the treatment of various polymeric medical and consumer devices to render their surfaces resistant to microbial attachment and proliferation. Other activities in this area have entailed out-licensing of antimicrobial technologies for use in ophthalmics, oral hygiene, veterinary, dermatology, dialysis, etc. plus formulations for state-of-the-art contact lens care products, oral care products, anti-infectives, and surface disinfectants.
He has been recognized as an expert in surface modification of biomaterials to enhance performance. The areas of activity include lubricity, reduced thrombogenicity, reduced inflammation and phlebitis, and enhanced resistance to infection.
Expert has been directly involved in the development, assessment, and licensing of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals and delivery methods as well as contact lens materials and contact lens care products.
Expert is knowledgeable of methods by which levels of allergens, metabolites, proteins, peptides, enzymes, and infectious agents can be measured in the human body. He can answer questions regarding the development, assessment, and regulatory registration and licensure aspects of medical diagnostics products.
He has worked with methods by which food products can be assessed for microbial contamination, presence of adulterants and contaminants (antibodies, hormones, steroids).
Expert was retained by an investment firm to evaluate the technical value of a "living skin equivalent" that was under development. After completing a technical and competitive analysis, he went on the become a consultant to the wound care company and, after six months in this capacity was asked to take on the role of president. He was involved in finance raising, business development and licensing. Although he has elected to remain in his consulting practice, expert is still in contact with the principals of the company. The company has since become a public corporation and, along with its marketing partners, introduced product to the market.
He has been retained by major multi-national pharmaceutical and medical device companies, e.g., Pfizer, CIBA Vision, as a member of product development teams. He is charged with coordinating the search for technologies that are suited to product improvement, line extension, etc.He has been retained by small and start-up companies - - frequently companies comprised of scientific founders - - to assist with strategic planning, preparation of business plans, and introduction to and negotiations with potential collaborators and licensees.
