Expert has over 40 years of experience researching ways to increase the nutritional value of food crops with respect to micronutrients and minerals. He has done extensive research and consulting on how to increase the bioavailability of micronutrients to humans in food crops. He has taught university courses (undergraduate and graduate levels) in plant nutrition and mineral nutrition for both plants and humans. He is a world expert on biofortification of major staple food crops with micronutrients (primarily iron and zinc). His most recent research has focused on prebiotics in food crops and how they can be used to improve the bioavailable amounts of iron in edible portions of major staple food crops (rice, wheat, maize and beans).

He was a consultant to HarvestPlus organization to develop breeding objectives for plant breeders that are biofortifying major staple food crops.He was a consultant to the International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) on why fertilizers should be used to improve human health.
