Expert has substantial experience in statistical experimental design, also called design of experiments (DOE). He has lectured on this topic and has presented a professional intensive course designed for the industrial environment. He has expertise in analysis of variance and evaluation via ANOVA. Expert has applied his knowledge in this area to his work in coating formulation design and processes, the chemical process industry, paper and pulp processing operations, printing processes, and other industrial processes.
Expert routinely uses Latin square as a screening tool for main variable effects according to linear mathematical models. He has used the statistical design of experiments (DOE) extensively, and he has excellent knowledge of structuring designs and its use in industry
Employing his knowledge of industrial coating processes, Expert is proficient in the theory and practical usage of central composite design processes.
Expert has had the opportunity to work with numerous polymers in an industrial environment. This work has provided him with a thorough knowledge of applied polymer chemistry in dealing with polymers and copolymers in solution and as mixtures. The polymers with which he has experience include acrylics, vinyls, esters, ethers, cellulosics, epoxies, melamines, phenolics, amines, formaldehyde condensates, urethanes, rubbers, and natural polymers. Expert has also studied polymer/solvent and polymer/polymer interactions, as well as both chain and condensation polymers and copolymers.
Expert has developed many photosensitive polymer coating formulations. The systems have used ultraviolet and electron beam as well as visible light to initiate the cure mechanism. Furthermore the chemistries include free radical and ionic mechanisms. The systems generate crosslinks or polymerize upon exposure to radiation thus changing their physical properties. Products with which Expert has had direct experience include inks, wood coatings, photoresists, photostencils, screenprinting stencils, and hard coats.
In order to solve many environmental compliance problems high solids have been used to significantly reduce volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions in coating processes. Expert has formulated many thermosetting and thermoplastic systems including melamine-formaldehydes, phenol-formaldehydes, polyesters, polyurethanes, and epoxies. Each of the systems which Expert designed has required polymer selection, additives and coating characterization, and degree of cure characterization.
Expert has extensive working knowledge of water-based coating systems and formulations. The polymers involved in the systems which he has designed have been water soluble, water dispersions, or latex types and colloidal dispersions. Substantial use of surface chemistry was required. Through this work he gained an understanding of surfactants and wetting agents. Expert has direct experience working with water-based UV curables, adhesives, water-reducible and alkyd paints, and inks.
