Processing and Marketing of Limestones of Various Types for Filler Applications

ID: 730895 Georgia, USA

Request Expert

Expert has been extensively involved with processing a wide range of limestone types (sedimentary, ollitic, chalk and marble ores) using Raymond mills, ball mills and high speed hammer mills for a wide variety of filler markets. He has developed low cost stearic acid coating processes, low cost grinding aids that increased the ball mill thru-put of 3 micron PVC pipe grade fillers by 30%, along with devolping processes for improving the quality of the coarser, cultured marble fillers.

In addition, he has worked with a major Lime Company to upgrade a portion of their excess limestone fines into PVC pipe and conduit grade fillers, taking the value of these fines from minus $4/ton to $70-90/ton.

He is very familiar with requirements of different filler markets having also held Technical Servise and Market Development positions. Having a background in processing a wide variety of ore types he is very skilled in deciding which markets are suitable for a particular ore deposit. The differences in grindability of the various ore types limits the range of markets they can serve.

After extensively researching the requirements of fillers used in plastic automotive body parts (SMC-sheet molding compounds and BMC-bulk molding comounds) he realized that Jamaican reef limestone ores would be ideally suited for this market. The unique processing properties of these fillers coupled with favorable transportion rates enabled them to gain a 75% market share within four years. Two US Patents granted in his name on these unique fillers provided market exclusivity for a number of years.

He is familiar with the problems that pyrite in limestone fillers lead to staining in Marcite swimming pools and can result in corrosion and odor problems with synthetic gypsum wall board.
Very knowledgeable concerning the hidden risk of some high silica content Texas limestone fillers which may lead to increased silicosis problems and seriously impact the life of pultruded polyester products, especially oil field sucker rods

He consulted with a leading lime producer to mitigate a problem they were having with fines disposal. Expert showed that a portion of the waste fines could be upgraded to highly profitable 3-micron PVC pipe grade fillers. He conducted the product development work and supervised the marketing effort. He briefly consulted with a group of Caribbean businessmen who were interested in processing Jamaican reef limestones into pills for Calium supplements. The market was too small to warrent any development.
