He has expertise in design and modeling of semiconductor lasers, especially distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, with more than 20 years experience in industries. He made a number of product laser designs for optical transmitters in the real field. He developed theoretical models of semiconductor lasers, and implemented them to industries as laser design tools. He is one of the first who made the three dimensional analysis of multi-quantum-well DFB lasers.

He has expertise of photonic integration such as electro-absorption modulator integrated laser, DFB laser arrays, semiconductor optical amlifier integration, and multi-section tunable lasers. He is one of the demostraters of cascaded DFB lasers for tunable laser applications.


He provided the design and simulation of the active layers for 1.3 um, 1.49 um, and 1.55 um wavelength semiconductor distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. He gave a novel approach idea to improve the yield of single-mode operation, which was demonstrated experimentally. He also provided a theoretical DFB laser model and explained the physics.
