Expert has the Ph.D. in Microbiology with 30+ years of research and teaching experience with appointments in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine; the Biomedical Sciences Department, and as Adjunct Professor of Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine; and as Research Professor, the Dalton Cardiovascular Research Center, Employer. He currently is "Professor Emeritus. He also is a board certified diplomate in Toxicology, American Board of Toxicology (academic, general, forensic, governmental, pharmacological, regulatory), and previously a member of the American Board of Forensic Examiners. He is a Fellow of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, American Institute of Chemists. He has experience with vaccines, immunology, antibiotics, whole cell culture, enzyme production, biodegradation, and bacteriology, especially Escherichia coli. His special field of research is the biology and chemistry of oxygen free radicals including applications for disease mechanism (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, dementia), use of oxygen for premature infants, supplemental ICU oxygen, hyperbaric medicine; redox-cycling mechanisms of action and toxicity of pharmaceuticals; oxidative stress mechanisms; oxidant defense mechanisms including vitamin and coenzyme Q supplements. Expert has authored more than 100 publications including two books, and been awarded more than $6.5 million in research grants. He serves as a peer reviewer for scientific journals including: Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, Analytical Biochemistry, Environmental Health Perspectives, American Journal of Physiology, Heart and Circulatory Physiology, Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Free Radical Biology and Medicine, Biomedical Letters, Chemical Research in Toxicology, International Journal of Biomedical Science, and others. He has reviewed more than three dozen scientific books and films for the Association for the Advancement of Science. He is on the editorial board for Cellbio, and ad hoc for The Faculty Press, Cambridge, England. He is on the Managing Editorial Board for Frontiers of Bioscience, an on-line Encyclopedia of Science and Medicine (2003 to the present). He has served as a science consultant and expert witness for legal matters in 25 States for plaintiff and defense in civil and in criminal cases. He has extensively served as a peer reviewer for agencies of the Federal Government, including for: the EPA, Superfund, NIH, NIEHS, CDC, ATSDR and AIBS, including for Toxicology Profiles for chemicals, and reviewer of individual grants and for program projects, both for research and administrative review. For the past 10 years he has been a judge of abstracts submitted for presentation of research at the annual meetings of the Society of Free Radical Biology and Medicine. He is listed in American Men and Women of Science, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and a dozen other listing sources.

Expert has done basic research on the biology of oxygen and oxygen radicals for 29 years. The work has applications for: cardiovascular ischemia-reperfusion injury and inflammatory reaction; oxygen therapy for bends and premature infants; carbon monoxide poisoning; anaerobic infections; cellular antioxidant defenses such as superoxide dismutases, catalases, and peroxidases; redox-cycling toxic mechanism of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, xenobiotics, and free radicals; and convulsions and degenerative brain disorders.

Expert has consulted for rendering plants, animal-rearing and husbandry operations, and legal nuisance complaints. He has technical
expertise in planning and conducting air analysis for odor, including hydrogen sulfide and organic compounds, and lagoon monitoring. He can provide microbiological, analytical and chemical expertise in odor analysis and odor control, including microbiological waste stabilization.

Expert is a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology with broad expertise in the toxicity (and cellular defense mechanisms against such toxicity) of pesticides, solvents, and pharmaceuticals, particularly those that redox-cycle to generate oxygen free radicals. The National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences toxicology study section funds his research in this area. He has served as a peer reviewer for Superfund projects for the US Army Medical Research and Material Command, the US Department of Commerce National Institutes of Standards and Technology, the NIEHS, and the NIH. He has done research in toxicology, and has served as a consultant and expert witness for legal cases for plaintiff and defense relating to poisoning of humans and animals by various chemicals from industrial, home and environmental sources since the early 1980's.

Expert's research has been continuously funded by peer reviewed grant applications since 1968. He is Principal and Co-Investigator on basic research supported by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences, National Institute of Health, the Department of Defense (Office of Naval Research), and the United States Agency for International Development. He has served as a peer reviewer for Program, Score, and Superfund projects, served as Assistant Director of a research center, and as a consultant in the preparation of research grant proposals.

Expert has performed various field and site analyses relating to environmental problems; consulted with attorneys on cases broadly in the life sciences including review of medical records for disease cause-and-effect relationships; assisted with safety review of pharmaceuticals; provided risk assessment; served as a peer reviewer for various federal agencies including NIEHS, NIH, EPA, Superfund, ATSDR, DOD, and others, including for grant applications, program projects, site visits, and Toxicology Profiles for various chemicals.
