Underwater Structural Inspection

Request Expert

Expert specializes in nondestructive testing (NDT) inspection of American Bureau of Shipping and United States Coast Guard surveys for underwater inspection in lieu of drydocking. He writes procedures, administers qualifications, and has conducted several research studies on various NDT techniques used underwater such as advanced ultrasonics, magnetic particle inspection, flooded member detection, and radiography. Expert has developed underwater inspection/NDT equipment when no reliable equipment existed. He developed an AC articulating MT yoke system to use on offshore complex node geometrics and completely water and pressure proof isotope source housing with remote actuation and remote radiation survey sensors. Expert has worked on the installation of the deepwater Maul A platform as well as heavy construction projects in harbors and power plants. He worked on several projects with the New Zealand Electricity Department for the underwater inspection of their large dam network.


Expert is an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector. He is qualified under the American Society of Non-Destructive Testing practices as a Level II technician in ultrasonics, radiography and dye penetrant, and as a Level III in magnetic particle inspection. Expert has qualified as a NavShips 250-1500 supervisor in the magnetic particle inspection method.


Expert has developed underwater inspection NDT equipment for diver use and for remote operated vehicles (ROVs). He has developed an AC articulating MT yoke system to use on offshore complex node geometries and a completely water- and pressure-proof isotope source housing with remote actuation and remote radiation survey sensors. He is a consultant for the oil, gas, and nuclear power industries to solve underwater engineering problems.


Expert has written recommended practices and trained personnel in the oil, gas, and ship-building industries in the techniques of hammer peening to improve the fatigue strength of welded joints.
