Expert spent over 33 years in engineering for General Motors, his last 17 years as the Engineering Director. The Engineering Director is responsible for the entire automobile, its design, manufacture, cost, reliability, and safe performance in the hands of the customer. In this leadership role, he had to be knowledgeable of every aspect of the car. In the case of the Corvette, he lead the team that developed cars that performed at the leading edge of what was possible ultimately leading to the 180 mph ZR-1 and the current generation C5-7 Corvettes. All cars, that performed on the street and on the race track with the best of exotic cars.

In order to make the Corvette a performance icon, Expert has knowledge and understanding of all the subsystems and technologies that make up a modern automobile. These range from high-performance power trains to ultra-high-speed tires to the light alloy and composite technologies that have made lightweight high-performance Corvettes possible. Modern cars deliver their performance as a result of electronic management of systems. The Corvette is a prime example, with computers managing engine, chassis braking, and stability systems, and body computers providing infotainment.

Since retirement from GM, he has used these experiences to manage an experimental car program that used 4 wheels steer-by-wire and brake-by-wire to demonstrate possibilities for future active safety systems.

Corvette highlights include:
• The first composite (fiberglass) suspension-leaf spring, for a 600% weight savings. Today, millions of cars and trucks use similar composite springs.
• Engineering an all-new Corvette as an aluminum-intensive sports car.
• The first electronic anti-theft, ignition key system, and Passive Keyless Entry System.
• Develop the Corvette as a production race car to compete in the SCCA Showroom Stock Endurance Series, in which Corvettes beat Porsche in every race in the three-year series, including all of the 24-hour races.
• The first six-speed manual transmission.
• The ZR-1 Corvette supercar,
• The first current generation driver-side airbag.
• Run-flat tires.
• The fifth generation C5 Corvette. The 22-Hz convertible structure and packaging to accommodate the engine, transmission, and passenger requirements were a new paradigm in convertible design.

As an automotive engineering expert, he has extensive experience consulting. He participated in a hybrid gas turbine flywheel-battery program, an electric car program that was a joint venture with a Chinese company, and for numerous companies that develop automotive components and materials.

While working for the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM), Expert was the Engineering Director for COMBATT, a cost-share program sponsored by TACOM to develop commercially-based trucks that approach the mobility and payload capacity of the Army's HMMWV. This program included extensive off-road field testing at the Nevada Automotive Test Center.
