Expert has been working on processing of video signals for more than 4 decades. In 1979, He received his PhD on the subject of compression of television pictures using the discrete cosine transform (DCT). His 40 years of experience in processing, compression and transmission of video over heterogeneous IP and wireless networks have been published in 6 books, 11 patents and more than 200 Journal and 370 conference papers.

In the past two decades Expert has been grand holder of several UK government, UK industry and EU funded research projects. His research outcomes in the forms of patents, publications and invited talks in numerous journals and conferences have fundamental impacts on the multimedia industry. Apart from his pioneering work on layered video coding which has had a great impact on the standard video codecs in the form of scalability, his other most internationally successful known work is video transcoding. Today video transcoders comprise the core of IT-broadcasting workflow for automated production, delivery and broadcast of TV. His other internationally recognized contributions include; video compression techniques, video quality metrics, motion estimation, Peer-to-Peer video streaming, video over mobile and internet.
